Remember back when I was panicking/distraught by the possibility of not seeing Kylie on tour this summer? and then the elation, the highest of highs I experienced when I realized I could see her in DC?
That concert was incredible. The show was simply flawless and Kylie stole my heart once again. I befriended a lovely older gay man who let me stand next to him in the aisle when I couldn’t see the stage from my seat. We shared a moment after the show and held each other; happy tears in his eyes. I felt like I was floating. It was beautiful.
The very next day I hop on a plane to South Africa. Blahblah I start my internship here blahblah settling in etc etc. Make lotsa friends. Hitdaclub. you know how it goes… Imagine my surprise —-SURPRISE!!! — when I learned that Kylie would be bringing the Les Folies tour to Cape Town!! SAY WHAT!
I know what you’re thinking. I thought it too. So many questions in my mind. Should I see her again here in Cape Town? Are the Kylie gays of South Africa as wild as I’ve seen them in the States? (probably). Would I go by myself? and then the most important question: Do I have enough money for it?
The answer is No. Being a fangirl is expensive and my brokeass has other priorities…
namely, bringing my drag alter ego, Aphrodykee, to Cape Town’s one and only nightly drag bar, Bubbles!
The Plan:
1) Hit up a Sephora on my pitstop back to Cali for my sister’s graduation, and drop all that Kylie money on makeups. [CHECK.]
2) Use my amazing connections with the lezzie community here - thank you Lara! - to find me a former drag queen makeover artist who has wigs/costumes for me to borrow. [CHECK.]
3) Prepare Prepare Prepare to perform at Bubbles Open Stage Night. [TO-DO.]
I am so full of excitement right now. First, I wanna kick myself for not having thought to bring ANY of my drag stuff from Michigan. Lesson learned: YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WILL NEED FEATHERED LASHES. Second, this is exactly the opportunity I was looking for — a place for me to practice and get better at all this. I have to have to have to WOW Lola Lou, the fantastic french queen at Bubbles. I will work for this.
I think Kylie will forgive me for reallocating my very limited funds (on a student budget here) toward this more than worthwhile and sparkling endeavor. Dreams do come true!!
